Analyzing DNA from patients and controls
DNA from patients and controls
The aim of this project is to develop a micro array-based method
enabling the analysis of thousands of SNPs. By analyzing DNA from
patients and controls, the researchers hope to find susceptibility
genes that could be used as drug targets and for diagnosis of schizophrenia.
For each individual, approximately 100 SNPs will be analyzed.
The numbers game
To get a feeling for the possible complexity, consider 13 genes
each in three possible variants. That number alone keeps many people
queuing weekly in filling out a football pools coupon.
The future
Calculation of associations will be conducted for a large number
of candidate genes. New interesting candidate genes will be added
to the list, and potential candidate genes for mutations will be
sequenced.
