BRAINS- a highly advanced image analysis
program
In June 1999, the standard protocol was
established for a series of MR pulse sequences to be used in conjunction
with special software called BRAINS. This is a highly advanced image
analysis program, which allows studies and measurements of segments,
regions, layers and structure volumes of the brain. The software
has been developed by professor Nancy Andreasen at Iowa College
of Medicine, Hospitals & Clinics, USA.
Method development is conducted in collaboration
with professor Andreasen. This is a crucial part of the project,
and effort is made to obtain clear and logical methodology. The
reliability between different BRAINS operators and test- retest
reproducibility has been tested and proved to be excellent.
In the present study, BRAINS is used to segment
brain tissue. Automated measures are made of volumes corresponding
to different tissue class volumes, e.g. gray and white matter and
cerebrospinal fluid.
