Brief description of present research:
The focus of our work has been to disclose the basic mechanisms underlying prevalent mental disorders by integrating clinical, molecular, biological and environmental approaches. To accomplish this we have systematically applied our clinical tools on specific patient-groups (schizophrenia, uni- and bipolar disorders, suicide victims etc) and on random population samples, to study different phenotypes from both a categorical and a dimensional view. The strategy of using random population samples in psychiatric genetic research is of great importance as this strategy have allowed and will allow the identification of basic genetic mechanisms i.e. in memory and personality, which probably will be of great relevance for the study of psychiatric disorders. A project like this, as emphasized, calls for specialist knowledge, covering clinical, genetic, biological, statistical, epidemiological and technological domains. The characterization and collection of relevant phenotypes are of outmost importance in our collaborative approaches. This work has resulted in a banking of approximately 9 000 individuals (of blood, DNA, plasma, serum).
