Antipsychotic drugs
The corner stone when treating schizphrenia is with no doubt medication
with so called antipsychotic drugs, or neuroleptics. This group
of medications consists of a number of chemical substances, and
is divided into several subgroups. These have all shown to be very
efficient in reducing the psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia, but
vary in terms of the side effects they may cause. For a more extensive
description of treatment with antipsychotic drugs, click on the

Other treatments
Apart from pure medication there are also a number of treatments,
which are usually used as a compelment to the drug treatment. To
these belong various
types of therapies and forms of social support, plus education and
information for the patients and their families and close surrounding.
In Sweden there is for instance Riksförbundet
av Intresseföreningar för Schizofreni (Riks-IFS)
and in the US National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI),
who both function to make sure the support to persons who directly
or indirectly are affected by schizophrenia is maintained according
to the regulations.
