Lena U Carlsson is a freelance science journalist with a background in natural science. Her column will be a permanent element of our web portal, however with varying content. The main topic will always be schizophrenia, even if the way the subject is illuminated may be somewhat different than ordinary.


Åke Göransson - Master of "Färgformen"
As I entered the room I was possessed with devotion, and I automatically lowered my voice. That is how Håkan Wettre, curator at Gothenburg Museum of Art, describes his encounter with Swedish artist Åke Göransson's works of art, which had just been hanged for the exhibition at the museum in the fall of 2002. Indoor pictures and views in delicate shades of green and grayish blue, flower pieces in shimmering poetic colors, and paintings in blazing red and purple filled the walls.

Edvard Munch - A creative mind
”Illness, insanity and death were the black angels who watched over my cradle and who followed me throughout my life.” This statement was made by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, whose paintings and graphic art are showed at Göteborg Museum of Art in Gothenburg, Sweden until January 6 2003. Lena U Carlsson has been to the exhibition.

"Bergtagen"
In the spring of 2002, Lena U Carlsson visited the exhibition "Bergtagen" at Röda Sten in Gothenburg, Sweden. This contained paintings by the artist Tomas Niklasson, in which he interpreted stories he had been told by people who have experienced psychosis.

Sigrid Hjertén
The Swedish artist Sigrid Hjertén, who was active during the first half of the twentieth century, continues to fascinate. Hjertén worked as an artist for three decades but she stopped painting since she had fallen ill with schizophrenia in her fifties.

Ester Henning: a special artist
The Swedish artist Ester Henning who suffered from schizophrenia was treated in mental hospitals during 66 years. During that time she produced a large number of works of art. Some of these are shown at Bror Hjorth's Hus in Uppsala in mars-april in 2001.
