The hard years with a lot of suffering

Many
of Åke Göransson's motifs consist of the view from the
one-room flat in Landala, and indoor pictures of the flat. At times,
six people live together in the limited space, and the artist paints
at night in order to be left alone. Large quantities of cigarettes
and coffee help keep him awake but are hardly healthy for his lungs
and nerves. Åke Göransson has trouble with both. He soon
faces pulmonary symptoms, and gradually begins to suffer from insomnia
and nervousness, as the demands from the world around him collides
with his urge to paint. When his fiancée Inga gives birth
to a child, Åke Göransson is unable to find a place to
live and experiences feelings of guilt. Inga also wants Åke
to give up art and become a full-time hairdresser.
