Studied with Matisse in Paris
Modern
way of painting and expressionism
Sigrid Hjertén studied with Henri Matisse in Paris, and she
was one of his favourite pupils. Matisse taught a modern way of
painting which ignores the rules of perspective and uses strong
colours and a decorative surface. Hjertén is also influenced
by German expressionism. Expressionists find it more important to
represent feelings than to reproduce motives.
Art with different stages of development
In Hjertén's art, where she greatly exposes herself, one
notices different stages of development. The influence of Matisse
is perhaps mostly discernible in the nineteen tens. Then Hjertén
creates many paintings with indoor pictures and views from her home,
first at Kornhamnstorg and later at Katarinavägen, in Stockholm.
Her husband Isaac and her son Ivàn, as well as Sigrid herself,
are often depicted in scenes that embrace various sorts of conflicts.
At this time Sigrid Hjertén gets acquainted with and inspired
by the art made by Ernst Josephson during his illness.
