Biografi: the period between 1912-1918

Several exhibitions in Sweden and abroad
In 1912 Sigrid Hjertén participates in a group show in Stockholm. In the following ten years she takes part in several exhibitions both in Sweden and abroad, among other places in Berlin in 1915, where she is well received. Sigrid Hjertén is also represented at the Expressionist Exhibition at Liljevalch's Konsthall in Stockholm in 1918, together with two other artists. However, most of the critics then write scathing reviews about her art.

Warm relation but marriage with great problems
childrens_clothesSigrid, whose husband was a Jew, lived in a time which was characterized by oppression of women and anti-Semitism. For long periods she lived alone with her son and a sister of her husband. Sigrid and Isaac seem to have been very attached to one another, but their marriage met with great problems. Sigrid apparently had difficulties with her identity as a woman and in combining her different roles as a mother, a wife and an artist. The conflicts of Sigrid's life have made a mark in her painting.
