Biography: 1920 to the beginning of the
30ties
The husband becomes a famous artist
Isaac Grunewald quickly made a name for himself as an artist in
Sweden, and he was much discussed in the media. But the articles
were not always friendly. Isaac was often exposed to anti-Semitic
attacks, which he gladly replied to and which he did not seem to
take too seriously. However, Sigrid who strongly engaged herself
in defending her husband was considerably more upset. The anti-Semitic
atmosphere further increased her by nature suspicious temperament.
Lives and paints in France
In
the years from 1920 to 1932 Sigrid Hjertén lives in Paris,
and she makes a lot of excursions to the French and Italian Riviera
for painting. But she is not exhibiting very much in this period.
Isaac mostly lives in Stockholm where he makes a brilliant career.
In the late twenties Sigrid more and more suffers from various psychosomatic
affections, and she complains of loneliness.
In a letter to Isaac she writes:
"Dear little Do-Do. I am in a state of
over-excitation which is like nothing on earth. It is only my imagination
that I raise to terrific troubles in my loneliness. Do not bother
about my certified mail. I have got absolutely nothing. The doctor
could not feel anything but I still fancied it and I have hardly
done anything, but I am so seized with remorse that it borders on
insanity (... ) My mind is quite devastated by loneliness."
