Ombudsman for the mentally ill
The relative's consultant belongs to the
social services but is also somewhat independent,
which the clients may appreciate. She is not an expert but works
more like a representative. The consultant does not write a case
journal and she cannot offer financial support.
The relatives I meet often carry a heavy
burden and are very tired, but they are also strong. Their wishes
and demands are often modest. They want for instance somebody who
listens to them and gives them support and encouragement. They also
want to be met with respect, says Margareta Tomkinson.
