How can relatives help a family member who
is afflicted with mental illness? This issue was investigated by
Anne Denhov,
who is an almoner and researcher at the Department of Research and
Development, Psykiatrin Södra, Stockholm, Sweden. She interviewed
31 persons who recovered from a serious mental disease. All but
one of the recovered individuals had previously been treated in
hospital for diseases such as schizophrenia and manicdepressive
illness. Quite a few of them were still on medication. The recovered
patients were asked about what individuals had been of greatest
importance for their recovery, and these people were also interviewed.
