Rats And Their Behavior
The thought was already from the beginning
to become a neurologist, and before he even had his medical degree,
Lennart established contacts with Professor
Knut Larsson, who worked with sexual behavior in rodents. Together
they made lesions in the brain of rats for the purpose of studying
their sexual behavior and mapping the neuronal circuits involved.
One of the experimental methods that Lennart used in his studies
had been developed by Dr. Walle Nauta, who at the time worked at
MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Cambridge outside
Boston. Lennart received a stipend from FFRP (Foundations Fund for
Research in Psychiatry, a non-profit organization which does not
exist today) to study with Nauta for a year. He stayed in Dr. Nauta's
laboratory for 7 years before he became Professor of Neuroanatomy
at University of Virginia in 1972.
