What is in the future?

Lars Terenius and his co-workers are currently searching for genes that may be involved in schizophrenia. Examples of such genes could be ones that are involved in the signaling systems in which the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, or the opioids are a part. Lars Terenius thinks that many of the answers to the mysteries surrounding schizophrenia may lie in the many studies that have already been performed earlier. By summarizing the results from these studies and looking at how they are related to each other he thinks that it may be possible to get a complete picture of what is happening in the brain in schizophrenia. Based on this knowledge, one may then develop new drugs and treatment methods for the disease.
