A single mom with two boys, Ann
Hulsker sought help for one of the boys, Zach, after teachers complained
of his odd behavior in class. The teachers figured drugs were to
blame. Then the psychologist called Hulsker with the real reason
for her son’s behavior: Zach was exhibiting early signs of
schizophrenia.

Vernie Baxter, a former truck driver who suffered from schizophrenia,
spent his life helping fellow citizens with mental illness. Recently
he died from drowning. NAMI - The National Alliance for the Mentally

has led to a new life for schizophrenic man (02/05/06)
About six years ago William Walsh, now 40 years old had a depression-triggered
mental breakdown. Since then, he has lost most of his life to the
illness. After the breakdown, he was admitted into a mental health
unit and has then been re-admitted on a regular basis. But in the
summer of 2003 William made a life-changing purchase, a digital
camera. It led to him taking up an interest that has since proved
highly therapeutic. William's case is just one of many cases, where
mentally ill individuals use art to cope with their illness.
