Sedation
Sedation,
i.e. drowsiness, is the single most common side effect of antipsychotic
medications. It occurs to some extent with all antipsychotics.
Sedation is most pronounced during the initial
phases of treatment, but it usually wears off to some extent after
taking the medication for some time.
Drowsiness during the daytime can be a problem
for a patient taking antipyschotic medication. For example, it may
be difficult to concentrate on the job or to fulfill the daily chores.
The doctor can help reduce daytime drowsiness by lowering the dose
of the medication, altering the time for medication intake or by
changing to a less sedating type of medication.
